Long Melford Delight
This is a lovely little hotel in a lovely position. It is clean and tidy, has character and charm and a very relaxed atmosphere with fine service from the staff.Thankfully it is decorated as a traditional country house rather than in the stark minimalist style that is afflicting so many of our old pubs and inns.As a general point, I read reviews of hotels and B & B's and am constantly astonished at the nit-picking criticisms that people make on trivial things from the road noise outside to the use of shower curtain rather than a screen. If one is a self-important enough individual such as to have unreasonably high expectations of perfection in life then disappointment is inevitable. Such a person would be able to pick silly holes in any hotel, but for the normal level-headed person, take it from me, The Black Lion gets all the fundamentals right. It's a great place to stay if you want a traditional English country hotel experience..

A birthday break
I booked this hotel as a surprise birthday treat for my fiancé. The hotel was lovely from the outside and had a great country feel. Whilst we didn't have time to walk around the village, it was nice to drive through and had a really old world feel to it, would love to go back and spend longer in the area. We stayed to be close to Colchester zoo, which took about 40 minutes to get to and was well worth the visit. We also went t colchester in the evening for dinner but couldn't find anywhere to park. Nothing to do with the hotel of course, but helpful to know.
The lady on reception, who if I remember was called nikki, was fantastic and you could tell how much she cares about the hotel and her guests. We also saw her the next morning and she made time to say good morning to everyone, was a lovely touch. The other staff working at breakfast were also polite and friendly.
As I knew we had booked the last room available, I wasn't expecting the best room in the house though must say I was a little disappointed. We had the Torkay room which had red walls, tartan bedding and a yellow bathroom. Was generally clean though the walls had large patches of stains on and the bathroom floor was not as clean as it could be. The worst part about the whole stay and the reason why I would be reluctant to return though, was that there was a lump of poo stuck to the toilet brush. Appreciate this is partly the fault of the guest before us as there is no need to leave it in that condition, but really should have been checked before we checked in. This unfortunately lowered my view of the whole hotel. The bed was comfy though and we had a nice nights sleep with tv, tea and complimentary biscuits.
Breakfast in the morning was quite nice. I had poached eggs but regretted it as one was raw and one was over cooked. The rest of the breakfast was nice though and I liked the choice of 'starters' I had toast with honey, yum. My partner loved the breakfast. I Also really liked the apple juice. Again, service at breakfast was great.
Overall, this hotel was ok. I was happy to pay the amount I paid via late rooms but would not have been happy to pay the going rate of £125 which the hotel charges for the room we had. I have stayed in better hotels for the same price and less. I would return on a deal but not at full price. I did not want to bring up the faults with the hotel staff as they were just so nice and I don't like to complain, but have to leave an honest review. All in all, the hotel did the job and my fiancé had a lovely birthday.
