4AA Assessed Inn Ratings explained
Polstead Street , Stoke by Nayland, CO6 4SA
This traditional Grade II 16th Century Suffolk Coaching Inn is set in the heart of Constable Country. Offering free Wi-Fi and parking, plus locally renowned restaurant and bar. Boasting charming features such as open fires, original brickwork and oak beams combined with a wealth of character. It is a typical ‘Old English’ country pub which has cosy snug areas coupled with a larger open plan dining room, this is undoubtedly a place where you can relax and enjoy the wonderful hospitality.

Bedrooms comprise of doubles and twins, each has been perfectly appointed whilst retaining all the character and charm that is befitting for a building of its age. All rooms are en suite and beautifully designed with antique furniture and wonderfully comfortable beds, free Wi-Fi, flat screen LCD television with free view, tea and coffee making facilities and hairdryers.

The restaurant serves tasty food and light refreshments throughout the day. Breakfast is the perfect way to start the day, served from 8:00AM with a choice of cereals, fresh fruit or Full English alongside fresh fruit smoothies, juices or Twining’s tea and organic fair trade coffee. For lunch guests can choose from a light option to a full selection of delightful courses, all of which has been carefully chosen to offer genuine value and choice. Dinner is available in the dining room, throughout the pub or al fresco in the courtyard, offering seasonally changing contemporary menus of traditional British and modern European cuisine in comfortable surroundings.

As with any traditional pub the drinks served are at the heart of the inn, focusing mainly on small regional breweries, and usually will have a guest beer for you to enjoy, as well as national and international favourites. Offering a wide range of white, red and rose wines from around the world that perfectly complement the variety of courses. Plus champagnes and dessert wines.

Set on a ridge overlooking the Stour Valley, Stoke by Nayland which is known as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. This is a delightful Suffolk village largely unchanged; in the centre is St Mary’s Church which dates from the 14th and 15th Centuries, famous for its 120 foot perpendicular red brick tower. Once a market town it is characterised by traditional country cottages painted shades of ‘Suffolk pink’, set amongst timber framed buildings including Guildhall and Maltings. It is also the home of two 18 hole golf courses in 300 acres of stunning landscape. The area is also well known by keen and leisurely walkers, with beautiful paths running through picturesque river valleys. Other idyllic villages are Polstead, Higham and East Bergholt; it’s also worth a visit to the many galleries, craft shops and medieval churches.

For an extra special stay, why not add Champagne £35.00, Flowers £30.00, Chocolates £20.00 , available as a supplement and waiting for you in your room.

Nice accommodation and location
A lovely place to stay, the room was quirky and clean, staff and food were exceptional. the only down side to having a room above the pub / restaurant is if you want an early night the noise travels, i would stay here again without hesitation.

Very good but a couple of uncertainties
Staff and food well above excellent. We had ordered afternoon tea which whilst very good was not really afternoon tea ie Only ham and egg mayonnaise sandwich filling on bread that was one inch thick per slice and scones already covered in whipped cream with a raspberry on top. English breakfast was superb but no fruit juice, fresh fruit or yogurt etc available which seemed very odd. Had to complain to owner in the morning about the noisy decorators in the adjoining room who must have slammed the door 30 times in about 2 hours from 08:20 onwards. I would stay at the Crown next time but my partner prefers The Angel!!!

Pleasant Pub stay
Room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Low beams in the room were a nuisance, but cant be helped in this type of aged property. Breakfast was good and dinner excellent. Staff pleasant and friendly.

Don't hesitate - book your room here !
This is an excellent place to stay. Staff are friendly, cheerful, helpful and efficient. The public areas are beautiful, warm and comfortable. Our room was small but perfectly formed and well-equipped, with a bathroom which appeared to be brand-new. No problem with the TV or the wi-fi. The food was imaginative, delicious and well-presented and only missed top marks from us because of a lack of seasoning, but that could just be our personal taste. We shall be going back, and we strongly recommend the Angel to anyone wanting a relaxing, tasteful and hassle-free break.
