Reviews - The Harpenden House Hotel

4AA Assessed Hotel Ratings explained
18 Southdown Road , Harpenden, AL5 1PE
This beautiful and historically rich Grade II listed Georgian town house is set in the Market Town of Harpenden and offers free parking, free WiFi and an excellent on site restaurant, The WinePress.

With features dating back to the 18th Century, such as the Welcombe Lounge’s fireplace, Harpenden House offers an intriguing tapestry of historical allure. Having been previously used as an 19th Century young ladies school and subsequently a Dominican Sisters convent, it was converted to a hotel in 1970 and has recently benefitted from a £2 million transformation.

The Hotel now offers the most luxurious rooms, from standard to feature all have high specification and are extremely comfortable. Having undergone extensive renovation in recent years rooms provide every modern comfort expected of a four star hotel, while retaining a wonderful charm and character only found in such historical properties. All main house rooms are fully air conditioned and offer luxury furnishings, toiletries and relaxing décor to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

The WinePress Restaurant offers simple, unstuffy service with delicious comforting food prepared with signature Michelin-style precision and intensity of flavour. As the name suggests, wine features prominently in the restaurant; a list handpicked by the Vineyard's Director of Wine offers over 40 wines and champagnes by the glass not to be found in the local area. Additionally, the Welcombe lounge and bar areas have been transformed to present a tranquil, modern setting.

Business meetings and conferences can be a pleasure at Harpenden House Hotel. The hotel is the perfect setting for conferences, weddings, seminars and exhibitions and you are sure to receive the highest quality service. The seven stylish conference rooms, all with natural daylight, are versatile and can accommodate up to 150 people. Without doubt, Harpenden House Hotel is also a splendid venue for a wedding reception and whether you have 30 or 120 guests you will be treated with utmost individuality.

Harpenden House Hotel offers easy access to a wide variety of nearby attractions sure to suit all tastes. The Whipsnade Wild Animal Park is one of Europe’s largest wildlife conservation parks, with over 2500 animals homed in 600 acres of parkland. The impressive Hatfield House displays superb examples of Jacobean craftsmanship in the form of beautifully carved wood and a rare stained glass window. Additionaly, Knebworth House offers numerous interesting connections to such historical figures as Elizabeth I, Charles Dickens and Winston Churchill. Close by, St Albans has something for everyone from the Roman history and churches to pubs, markets and even ghostly happenings in the city's magnificent Abbey Church which dominates the sky line.

£173 pounds originally?? My arse-as Jim Royal would say........It wasn't even worth the £93 I paid
I turned up for a wedding meal at the Harpenden House Hotel, very excited that I was staying in a luxury hotel and a £173 bedroom (£93 at Late rooms ).. Quickly I was disappointed. The room was clean and pleasantly functional (breakfast not included) that's about all. I stayed at a Travel Lodge in January in a by far lovelier room. My daughter and son-in-law paid about £8 more for a superior room that was very nice indeed. I didn't get it! Was it that I was on my own and thought to put up with anything. Needless to say I will not use this hotel again.

Fabulous Value and lovely location
Friendly staff and lovely comfortable room. I'm sure some people could find room to criticise the fact that the carpet isn't brand new or the waitress didn't speak very good english (but was very pleasant and happy to help), but considering the price it was more than good enough. The food was excellent and the breakfast was too. The dining room is lovely and Harpenden is a lovely little town with nice pubs and a few shops in easy walking distance. The Old Cock Inn was great for a lunchtime drink and looked like they were planning live music later on.

Overnight stay in Harpenden
The hotel was OK but my room was in the external block which meant it was a cold walk from reception to the room.
The room itself was comfortable once it had warmed up but with no heating in the bathroom, it was not a pleasant experience. Having said that I did warm up with a hot shower.

Noisy
We have stayed here a few times now and I specifically asked to be roomed in the main house and not the courtyard which is a bit of a struggle to get to ans separate from the reception so you have to go outside and up and down stairs. The room in the main house was reasonable and no complaints on that basis it was however very noisy , the floors outside creaked, and as it seemed that every other guest had to walk past our room we didn't really sleep the walls were paper thin and we were treated to an audio sex show from our neighbours (morning and night). The free wi-fi changes every 24 hours and is a bit inconvenient when staying for two days. Breakfast on Sunday morning was very busy although we didn't pay the extra tenner for breakfast we joined our party and the staff sorted us out by seating us in the bar , on the whole the staff were very good. I'm a frequent domestic and international traveller and this is not a 4 star hotel so its a bit pricey even on discounted rates.
