Excellent food and service
I stayed 2 nights, eating in the restaurant both nights. The room was very nice, spacious with desk, 2 armchairs, en suiite bathroom.
The service from the owner and all the staff was impeccable - very professional and polite.
The quality of food and wine in the restaurant was exceptional and very good value for money. The lounge bar was well-stocked (I counted about 20 different whiskies available).
I'd particularly recommend this hotel to those over 40 wanting to stay in a traditional thatched Devon cottage property and eat a hearty 3 or 4 course meal with fine wines.

Restaurant and Accommodation very different standard
Restaurant served a good selection of food and we would eat there again. Restaurant service was a little unpolished; reaching over one to get to the other, having to self serve wine, but for us it was not a problem accepting a country restaurant is very different to what we find in London. My message is if you eat there, don't judge on the refinement of service but on the food; which was excellent in both taste and presentation.
The most important thing for us in a room however, next to cleanliness, is the quality of the bed, bedding and pillows. Sadly lacking. We could hear and feel the twanging springs of the mattress even sitting on it. The bedding was sheets and a rather rough blanket, not a duvet. It was a most uncomfortable night with little sleep.

Welcoming and comfortable
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Our twin room was comfortable, spacious and well equipped with a small dressing area. We dined here on 2 nights and the food was great. Would like to return in the future.

Barton Cross Hotel
Used as a one night stop-over so my review is limited. Hotel is positioned in a very small quiet village which is fine for one night but would be restrictive for a longer stay. We only had sandwiches to eat which we thought ok but a little overpriced as they were very basic. Good sized bedroom with en-suite

Hotel with old world charm
A beautiful 17th century thatched cottage with charming, spacious rooms - this hotel was a pleasant surprise as we only booked just after midnight for the next day's accommodation . Laterooms was easy and efficient.
Despite this quaint, cottage with beautifully clean rooms and a charming welcome, the highlight was the evening meal. All meals were cooked from scratch and these well-presented, delicious meals were served in gorgeous, candle-lit dinning room.
The only criticism we had was the slow service - but the food was worth the wait!
