honest review
Pub is a bit dated but was very busy and had a friendly crowd. room 8 much better.
However- mouldy seals around bath which is a shame when the bed and bed room where clean, comfy and simple.
The breakfast was good but isn't served until 8:30 so you wont get an early start walking!
The staff were friendly but a bit off the ball.
I would happily stay again for the money. A cheap simple clean room with everything you need.

accommodation very tired, house keeper had no idea of house keeping. very slap dash.
Could be a lovely place for a break, but pub not open for lunchtime no food available for first three nights. Breakfast was fine. House keeper didn't bother with bath towels the first night. Left each guest two hand towels instead. Although was summoned in at 10 pm to rectify this. Hygiene in the rooms was appalling. The only thing missing were mushrooms growing on the mould in the bathroom. By the way the house keeper was going about her job. She had lost the will to live.
We got the impression that the place is about to change hands. Before booking telephone first.

Our stay
Overall we had a very lovely stay. We stayed on the Sunday and arrived after 6pm, unfortunately we didn't get to try any of the evening meals. But the lady who worked there kindly offered another pub we could go to for dinner which stopped serving at 8pm. Room was lovely, standard and clean and basic. No problems. Breakfast was lovely, large and value for money. Would stay here again.

Best for traveling by car but if you enjoy walking up, it will take 15-20 minutes from Matlock rail.
We booked the accommodation with addition payment for the cooked breakfast, unfortunately, we woke up around 9 and went for breakfast around 9.30 am,, just to find out that they didn't serve breakfast anymore. So we paid for nothing, but as it was our false, we can't complain much. So it is better to ask the time for your breakfast first .
Moreover, spare your time to walk UP to this accommodation, it takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on your speed.
Staffs are overall nice and polite,

Friendly family stay - good value for money
We spent the day cycling on the High Peak trail from Middleton top where we had hired bikes and then checked in the Duke of Wellington for a night. We got a very friendly welcome. The family room was great with one double bed and a small room attached with bunk beds perfect for our two boys (aged 4 and 6). It was clean and looked newly decorated. The bathroom however was not as nice and let the room and experience down a bit. It smelled a bit of damp and the plumbing was quite noisy. We had diner in the pub. The food was good value for money and the atmosphere really nice and child friendly. We were lucky to have checked in early as diner had to be ordered quite early as it was a Sunday. There is a couple of good outside garden spaces. In one of the garden, there is a play area with a climbing frame and slides for the kids which let us enjoyed a drink after diner while they happily played there. We had a cooked English breakfast in the morning which was nice. The new cook was very friendly. We then went to Buxton and visited the Pooles Cavern and walked to the temple at the top of the hill and had a picnic there before heading back to London. All in all, we had a really enjoyable stay in a nice and friendly environment. Perfect place for family with young children.

There's a rumbling noise when you use the toilet/shower. It was quite loud that it disturbs other people when you flush the toilet during the night. And also, the room needs to de-cobweb and dusted. Kettle was dusty as well. Teaspoons were sticky.
I will stay again if those things are improve.

Comfortable room
The room was large with an a joining room with a bunk bed, which our 6 year old daughter loved. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the shower was not working, however, they were very quick to act and offered the use of another room after trying to fix it. Overall a nice stay.
