The Georgian Townhouse, Newark

We had a very enjoyable stay with Chris, who was very pleasant and helpful.

She booked a taxi for us and bought a bottle of Worcestershire sauce specifically for my husband's breakfast. I would be very happy to have stayed here as a lone woman. Far better than staying in a hotel.

The Georgian Townhouse was the most beautiful accommodation one could wish for.

The lady of the house was very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. She personally cooked our breakfasts to order while we waited in the large kitchen/breakfast room - the menu was very extensive and every taste was catered for. Our en-suite room was lovely, looking out on the garden, and very tastefully decorated. The bed and bedding were a dream and there was plentiful hot water and luxurious towels etc. Wonderful. Can't praise it too highly.

Accommodation let down by difficult attitude of landlady

While the Georgian building was impressive and the room was comfortable and very clean, unfortunately it was downhill from thereon in because of the landlady's unfriendly and difficult attitude.

From the outset, she expected to be complimented on absolutely everything and took even the most minor criticism (e.g. lack of feather pillows) very badly. She even objected to my opening my sash window for some fresh air.

The owner clearly had a problem with people from the South in general and with people from Essex in particular. Blunt personal comments she made about where I live and even my accent were inappropriate and quite offensive and made me feel very uncomfortable and annoyed. The owner lacked any sense of humour and conversation tended to be very one-sided.

Also, she expected me to pay for my room the same day of arrival, but far worse than that was the fact that she expected me to rush my breakfast and to check out early so that she could attend a pre-booked doctor's appointment, which eventually resulted in an argument on account of her increasingly hostile and disagreeable attitude, so that this stay ended on a very sour note indeed, not least because she didn't even have the common courtesy to say goodbye when I left, which was inexcusable.

On balance, £80/night for what amounts to a guest house or bed and breakfast accommodation is a top rate to charge and therefore, the guest is entitled to expect a great deal in return. On the basis of my stay, I feel that the owner did not fulfil her side of the bargain given her determination to suit herself to the detriment of her guest whose needs were obviously secondary to hers, which I found selfish and very unprofessional.

A stay at this type of establishment fails or succeeds according to the person running it and in this case it was solely the unfriendly attitude of the owner who ruined my stay.

Having read through other guest reviews of this guest house, I am aware that no one else has reported similar problems, but in light of my own experiences , I felt obliged to record them without exaggeration for the sake of balance.

Overnight stay at the Georgian Townhouse

A friendly welcome by the owner and she gave lots of information on good places to eat in the town.

Simply the best breakfast choices I have had at guest house, would match that of a top quality hotel.

Modern luxury in a period setting

Thank you to Chris at the Georgian Townhouse for a warm welcome, a spotless room with a lovely bathroom and a super comfy bed.

A great night's sleep was followed by a delicious breakfast with lots of choice and plenty of fresh fruit. All this at a reasonable price and only 5 minutes walk from the centre of Newark with its market, specialist shops and a great choice of places to eat.
