Don't stay here if you can fnd anywhere else!
One of the worst places I have stayed in in the world and definitely the worst in England.
I was attending a conference at the university and arrived with little time to spare so I just wanted to drop off my luggage and pay the bill - my taxi was waiting. I found a door with chipped paint and a paper sign on it saying to ring the bell and if there was no answer to try a series of phone numbers. I waited a long time and no-one came and was about to ring when someone in the carpark told me the door was open all the time. I found the gentleman in charge in a pokey back room and was unable to make him understand that I needed to leave quickly - he insisted on my filling in a form (or rather putting info on a blank piece of paper as required by a master copy of the form. Then I had to go to my room to leave my bag - this was in an annex up two staircases with laundry strewn all over the corridors. I was in too much of a hurry to complain, but they had lied about it being an en suite room and the bathroom was fairly disgusting. Also, the door handle came off on the inside every time I used it making me feel that I was in danger of being locked in - the shower head also came off. The room itself was clean with clean sheets and towels and tea-making facilities, but pokey and shabby. When I left, there was no-one at 'reception' and so I left the key outside. The people in charge really still need to learn the basics.
The main building is scary, a corridor is used as a very crammed reception, and the people were very odd.
We were given a piece of paper and a former traveler registration cards and we were asked to copy in the piece of paper our personal details as they are requested in a registration card. We were then sent two a building about 5 hundred meters away, which was very clean. In fact, the bathroom was very small but not bad and the towels and bed linen were very clean. The room was very small and there was too much heating!
Not very good
when i first got there, (I got there before the check-in time and I acknowledge that was my fault) the host wasn't there and so we had to wander around some times and get back to the house.
But then all of a sudden, almost everything including the room rate and the location changed. He just told me the address of another flat, which was totally different from the one we booked in the first place. And there seemed to be some rats there. except those problems I mentioned above, "everything" was satisfactory.
One night stay
When I got there, there was no one to greet me for around 10 minutes and the administration was informal at best, however I was given a family room with 3 beds, as that's all they had - hence my mark for value for money.
The room was pleasant and the en suit adequate. Overall OK for a one night stay.
i have stayed in better hostels
The room was dirty and unfinished.
Had to share bathroom which was not very clean. The storage was made from unfinished pieces of plywood. I would not recommend this dump to anyone
Substandard accommodation at Athena Guest House Oxford
On arrival at 22.30 hours the room appeared to be grubby with old shabby furnishings.
The next morning with better lighting it was obviouse that the room hadn't been cleaned before our arrival apart from clean sheets on the bed.
The shower room had half used shampoo with the lids off on the shower soap rack. The bath towel I first picked up having had my shower was covered in stains and make up. All the bottles of shampoo on display as complimentary were half empty. In the bedroom there was clumps of dust on the floor along with an empty biscuit wrapper and behind where the kettle and tray was kept were several wrappers, some used and some not. The cups on the tray had merely been rinsed and still had dirty water in the bottom, one had a large chip in it. In one of the bedside drawers ther was an empty Rizzler box and sundry rubbish
We tried to find the owner next morning to complain but couldn't find them on the premises. Though the owner may have been the man we saw smoking in the back yard. We did ring him and he seemed to show little concern saying that we should have reported it the night before, but there had been nobody there when we arrived to complain to. He did however text an apology 2 hours after we had left.
Athena Guest House
I was expecting en suite but had a shared bathroom instead.
Not bad, good location
I needed a quick booking for a location on cowley road.
This place was just the thing. It was a good location. Not bad. The TV and digi box was a bit old and brought a bit of nostalgia. There was a very house like feel to the room which I think some might like and others might not. I for one liked it.
The owner was rude and there was a weird smell about the place definitely not worth paying that amount of money won't be staying ever again!!
Heath Robinson room design
room looked as if it had been designed by Heath Robinson.
The TV was tied onto a stand with very dodgy looking electrics .. Lots of extension sockets . There was a broken fridge in the room.. .. Why. .
On the plus side, the bed was clean and comfy and the room quiet.
No wifi code available - would have been nice to have that .
Bit pricy for bed only.
