A highly enjoyable and relaxing weekend
Can't fault the place - good location - it helped that the place looked smart and attractive on a sunny day, but the quality of service was good, too - friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The room was spacious enough, well looked after, and gave us everything we needed. Dinner was excellent - and the breakfast was good, too. Check-out time of 1000hrs is a little early, perhaps, but the staff seemed quite relaxed about extending it - though we didn;t, actually!

Like something out of The Shining
We stayed here on Thursday 28th Feb, for my birthday. We stopped here for one night on route to Cornwall for the weekend, my dad actually chose it because of the reviews in the good beer guide! Unfortunately if you are not a real ale afficionado (like myself), there is not a great deal to like about this place (he did say the beer was great though!). Room was stark and basic, the hotel was tatty (to be fair there was a lot of decorating work going on which may improve this) and it was deserted! For such a huge hotel in the middle of nowhere it had a strange feel about it...there were more staff than guests.
I had a meal there for my birthday in the evening and we were pretty much the only ones in a huge dining room. You'd think that being the only ones eating that the meal would be lovely and well prepared - nope. My expensive steak was like something you'd get in Spoons and was closer to 'well done' than the 'rare' that I ordered. Oh well. The other members of our group were equally unimpressed with their choices. The staff were kind enough to allow my wife to bring out a birthday cake after our main course that she had bought especially and they let us eat that for desert...probably the best part of the meal actually - note: Thorntons do a nice chocloate cake!
Upon checking out we were informed that we got a 'great rate' of £66 as it was normally about £90-odd quid...well, we thought £66 was pushing it! The lady at reception seemed quite put out when we remarked on this. Maybe we were just unlucky and it just wasnt our night.
The hotel is in a good spot if you like the scenery and maybe if it was busier we would have enjoyed it more. It's not the worst place I've ever stayed but we left feeling decidedly under-whelmed.

We booked a night at the Dartmoor lodge just as a break from the kids during the school holidays. The hotel was everything we expected,we booked the four poster room and were very impressed. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpfull and the breakfast was fantastic. With Ashburton well within walking distance we tried some of the local pubs and loved the fact they were the older style village pubs rather than the bar/restaurant theme pubs that we have in most towns. All in all a great hotel and area.
