4Self Classified Guest Accommodation Ratings explained
Hedgefield House, Stella Road Ryton, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE21 4LR
Welcome to Hedgefield House, a stunning Georgian mansion set in four acres of beautiful award- winning gardens, on the edge of the Northumbrian countryside. The house has a colourful history, prior to being converted into guest accommodation. Dating back to 1804, we have documented evidence that Hedgefield House was the first home in Britain to have a telephone installed. In 1877, the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, made the first experimental phone call from the drawing room to the local coal mine. We are ideally situated only 10 minutes from the city centre and Gateshead Metro shopping complex and 10 minutes walk to historic Ryton village, with its numerous cafes and restaurants. We are also only a short distance from the River Tyne and the Hadrian’s Wall walk. Its location makes it perfect for hikers, bikers and city visitors. All en-suite rooms are decorated and furnished in lavish French Louis style and are well equipped, maintaining many original features. A continental breakfast is also included. We have great leisure facilities for our guests to use, including a sauna, gym and relaxation area. Free parking is available for guests.

Really enjoyed our weekend here
Hedgefield Field House Hotel is something of a surprise - it's easy to miss it because it is set well back from the road, up a private drive in delightful wooded surroundings - and it is a truly delightful place to stay. On arrival we were greeted by the owner David and shown to our room. Due to refurbishment upstairs, we had been upgraded to a suite on the ground floor. It was spacious, warm and tastefully decorated with an ensuite bathroom including walk in shower. The bed was comfortable, the breakfasts generous and delicious, and staff were friendly and courteous. We have already recommended it to family and friends, and will definitely be staying there again!

An attractive and restful hotel
The hotel could be described as a Small Country House hotel, set in its own grounds.
The rooms are spacious, very comfortable and attractively furnished in French style.
Breakfast is 'Continental', a 'cooked breakfast' is not an option.
The hotel does not supply any other meals, but there are meal facilities in the area.
Primarily, it appears t be used by business travellors.
My wife and I were made very welcome by the resident proprietor.

Nice, but a tad disappointing
Standard double room for 1 night, £55 via laterooms.
No en-suite bath/shower, had to share which for a 4* was a bit disappointing! More a house than a hotel, walls very thin so could hear other rooms talking. DVD player in room was broke, manager informed but no alternative offered. TV mounted too high onto wall, unable to make out pictures unless sitting bolt upright!
Bed very comfortable, nice surroundings and staff friendly and helpful.

We are glad that you had a comfortable night's sleep at Hedgefield House. The room booked was a non en-suite room which is described as having a shared toilet and bathroom. We do have en-suite rooms should guests prefer to have en-suite facilities. Regarding the DVD, after you left we did try another disc which worked. Unfortunately, on the night of your stay, as we were fully booked, we did not have a spare DVD player to try your disc. The TV bracket in your room was of a swivel design and could be tilted to various angles. I'm sorry you didn't realize. Regarding sound levels, the walls are all soundproofed but we cannot control the volume of guest's conversations. Most rooms have 2 foot thick stone walls. At all times we try to provide the best service and we are sorry that you were disappointed.
