Reviews - Velotel

Handboogstraat 1 , Bruges, 8000
In Bruges, next to the city centre, in the middle of a new green park, you will find the Velotel.

Both for the demanding business or leisure traveler the ideal location to visit the ‘Cultural Capital 2002’.

You are staying in the immediate vicinity of the medieval ramparts and city gates.

By car you are within 5 minutes in the ‘Venice of the North’, with its numerous historical curiosities, typical shops and delicious restaurants.

Our restaurant annex bar “Ter Poele” surprises you with delicious French cuisine.

You can have a cosy à la carte dinner, order a light meal or just have a tasty apéretif before going into town. In summer time we will gladly serve you on our terrace.

The hotel opened in 2002 and has 118 standard rooms and 2 junior suites.

There is a free WIFI connection troughout the complete hotel.

Apollo
Overall the hotel was well placed if you have a car and want free parking as you are still able to walk to the old city center. The hotel itself has a nice atmosphere and the staff are polite and helpful. The food in the restaurant was ok and basic. Our room was not up to standard for the 4 star rating as the shower holder was broken and a previous persons underwear was in the room. Furnishings in the room were little tired.

Location vs Price
If you are planning on going to Bruges you are probably expecting to spend a lot of money (especially over the Christmas market season), taking this into account the hotel was pretty good value. The main downfall of this hotel was the distance from town and the limited transport to town. It was probably a good 2 mile walk to the centre of town if you knew where you were going (Bruges is a maze). There was a bus to town but it was a 5 min walk to the bus stop and the buses stopped at 8.30pm. The third option was a taxi which the hotel does subsidise but it's still pretty pricey. So whether it is better to pay more for a hotel in town is something to consider.
Right, onto the actual hotel. Room was lovely; large and clean with a shower/bath and lots of towels. The toiletries were a bit disappointing, an "all in one" soap attached to the wall. The sauna and fitness area was small but did what it said on the box (v. hot sauna 100degC, was lovely).
We did have a few issues with our stay, the wifi did not work all weekend,, we told the front desk and they said they knew it was a problem but did not try to rectify the problem :-s Also our mini bar was empty and the room service menu (not really an issue but was a bit strange).
Finally the food and drink options, the vending machine drinks were extortionately priced which is annoying when you're dying for a drink but don't want to visit the bar. We had 1 meal in the hotel and although it was nice I would go to town for some amazing food.
What I would tell myself if I was planning this trip again: "Go to Ghent/Gent"
Haha, nothing to do with the hotel but as a young person with not much money I think Bruges was a bit of a strain on the purse. Gent is beautiful, much larger and the buildings are fantastic. I would advise staying in Gent and doing all your shopping there then maybe having 1 day in Bruges just so you can say you went :-D
