Glad we weren't put off by the negative reviews
We needed to book a room at short notice and found this hotel online.. We were almost put off by the negative reviews but there were sufficient good reviews for us to take a chance. We arrived at 7pm and were pleasantly surprised. Our room (standard, not superior etc) was an interconnecting room, so my husband and I had a double room and a large bathroom with a lovely large corner bath, and our 3 year old twins had a smaller interconnecting room with a single bed, z-bed and their own smaller bathroom. Each room had its own TV which was great for the twins and would have been highly beneficial had we have been in the room longer. The room was by no means spotless - cobwebs, rubbish under furniture (which we only discovered as we were looking for the TV remote control) and the hoovering hadn't been very thorough, but on the whole, the room was large, the bed comfortable, generously stocked tea and coffee tray, shower gel and shampoo in the bathroom and there were more than sufficient towels. We had no view as were at the back of the hotel but this in no way bothered us as we arrived late and were leaving after breakfast.
The breakfast was very enjoyable, a selection of cereals, yoghurts, fruit and nuts, juice, toast (self service) and the actual cooked breakfast was delicious. Admittedly not as much choice as some hotels but what was available was good quality and nicely presented.
The view is lovely, especially from the lounge where we sat after breakfast and we took advantage of the sunny weather and walked around the grounds before leaving.
Overall, we would book again and thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay. I would also just mention that all of the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Fantastic location and scenery, but hotel is quite dated. Balcony rooms were very nice, but what you would expect at this price. As a result the other rooms were certainly overpriced especially when compared to some of the local b+b's and guest houses which we've previously stayed at. The rooms are also a complex maze of corridors so isnt suitable for disabled guests.
Food was good quality local produce, however service was a bit hit or miss - they didnt seem to be able to cope when restaurant was busy. The spa aspect was also disappointing - the pool and hot tub were both rundown and cold. These were based in a greenhouse on the lawn.
Either laterooms or the hotel also messed up our booking and when I called to confirm was informed that there were no rooms booked. Thankfully the hotel did manage to rectify this at the last minute despite being fully booked. Ive never had any problems with laterooms in the past nor did I have any problems with addition bookings I made (via laterroms) for friends at other hotels for the same period.
Personally I wouldnt recommend this hotel to others. I believe there are much better quality and certainly better priced hotels/b+b's in Ilfracombe than this hotel. We paid a premium expecting a superior hotel but this isnt the case.
