The Durham Ox is a traditional 300-year old pub, family owned for the last twelve years. We are situated in the historic village of Crayke, North Yorkshire, with breath-taking views over the vale of York on three sides, and a charming view up the hill to the medieval Church. Crayke is less than 25 minutes from York City Centre and in the heart of Herriot Country.
The Durham Ox offers comfortable surroundings without recourse to trendy fixtures and fittings. The bar area has original flag stones on the floor and on the walls, oak panels fitted by the local woodcarver as well as a bar that bears his name still take pride of place. With a roaring fire alight in the inglenook fireplace in winter and an outside balcony for summer dining the pub oozes atmosphere.
Five of the cottages are converted farm buildings. The two Junior Cottages offer a double room with en suite wet room, seating area, tea and coffee making facilities and H2K products. In addition the Large Cottage is spread over two floors with two large bedrooms, one double and one twin, with ensuite bathroom and separate shower, relaxed sitting room and a gallery kitchen. The Superior Suites are doubles with super king size beds and have bathrooms with a bath and separate shower. The Studio Suite is located above the pub and offers spacious luxury accommodation for two adults with 600sq feet of space, a super king bed, en suite bathroom, sofas, flat screen television, kitchen and honesty bar.
A private dining area and sitting room for parties up to sixteen offers a comfortable yet smart additional dining option.
Our new Barn room offers a fantastic venue for events up to a hundred guests. We are happy to create bespoke events in the Barn, which can also be used as a conference facility.
The Durham Ox embraces the principle of good food in relaxed surroundings and we have always endeavoured to use the freshest and best of ingredients, bought locally.
