About the hotel

Located just five minutes from the famous market town of Melton Mowbray, Scalford Hall Hotel is a picturesque Edwardian country mansion originally built at the turn of the 20th century as a weekend hunting lodge for Major Mann Thompson, who was a close friend of Edward VIII. Their friendship was symbolised by Edward VIII’s gift of an ornate fireplace that remains in Scalford Hall to this day. In 1944, Colonel Colman, the founder of Colman’s Mustard, purchased Scalford Hall and lived happily with his family until 1969.

Set amongst 8 acres of carefully landscaped gardens in the heart of the Leicestershire countryside, our magnificent country house complements the relaxed surroundings with excellent service and hospitality. Our hotel provides a refreshing change from contemporary venues, enabling our guests to enjoy uninterrupted relaxation, restful surroundings and a peaceful night’s sleep All of our 77 en-suite bedrooms are spacious, well-furnished and impeccably maintained. Each room comes fully equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat screen TV, ample desk and seating space, telephone, hairdryer and complimentary hospitality trays. Grounds fantastic, rooms very disappointing - shower was filthy and hotel VERY noisy!!!!

The grounds are absolutely beautiful - stunning and grand.

The staff were friendly and efficient and the food was good. Unfortunately, those are the only things which were good at this hotel. We booked two rooms - both had revolting showers (to the extent that my daughter and I couldn't even use them!) and the ceilings/walls were so thin that it was like the 'neighbours' were in the room with you. Sadly, one of them had a toddler and baby who cried nearly all night and my husband and sons room had a 'honeymoon' couple above them who were very noisy!. Came home for some sleep and would not recommend at all.

Culture clash

I struck unlucky and arrived late, evening during an office party/awayday maybe, with music in the bar so loud it was painful.

I'd missed dinner but a member of staff got me a huge plate of sandwiches and was sympathetic about the noise. When I looked at the website later, I realised the hotel specialises in events but there are no alternative social spaces for non-participants.
