Slightly derailed on arrival!
With friends living nearby,I'd long wanted to stay at The Sidings,as it looked like a novel and quirky place to stay.
Unfortunately, the rooms were musty & damp when we arrived, with mould & hairs in the shower cubicle. The small sliding windows had been kept shut & so this hadn't helped matters. My wife suffers from asthma,so these conditions didn't help. The sink was cracked and there were some lightbulbs missing. Admittedly, the accommodation is fashioned from 60 year old railway carriages - that's the charm & appeal of the place - but our room was crying out for some "TLC". I took the Duty Manager into the room & pointed out my findings; he was apologetic & had the shower re-cleaned whilst we had a drink at the bar. The reception area & restaurant were fine however: well laid out with more pieces of old railway memorabilia than one could wave a red flag it. We dined in the restaurant, and the food & service were generally good. There's simply SO much potential at The Sidings - especially with it being within 5 miles of York's city centre - but I feel that a genuine opportunity is being missed here. I would possibly stay there again (if they smartened up their act!); but it's a definite "NO" from the Missus!
Service excellent, friendly staff, food served at dinner and breakfast very good.
Novel room very unique but now looking tired. Owner says they are under a renovation plan. Looking forward to visiting again. Would highly recommend .
