About the hotel
With a magnificent view of Lake Windermere and the Langdale Fells, Holbeck Ghyll is idyllic in any season, surrounded by the extensive woodlands and natural beauty of Cumbria. Its Michelin star restaurant overlooks lake and mountains, and bedrooms, both in the main house and the nearby Lodge, share the same glorious views. Some of the hotel's spacious suites have been designed with families in mind.
In the midst of the breathtaking scenery of England's Lake District, Holbeck Ghyll is perfectly situated for exploring all the attractions of this beautiful region. Built in the 19th century, the house was bought as a hunting lodge in 1888 by Lord Lonsdale, then one of the richest men in the country. Known as the "Yellow Earl", he ensured that his name went down in history by bequeathing the famous Lonsdale Belt to boxing. His lodge was set in the incomparable landscape of the Lake District, over- looking one of England's loveliest stretches of water - Windermere. Relaxation at Holbeck Ghyll can take the form of walking or boating, golf or birdwatching. . . or indulging in a range of facilities and treatments available at the hotel's own Spa. Holbeck Ghyll is Cumbria Tourist Board's Hotel of the Year for 2000-2001. *********************************************************

Great location, great accommodation & even greater food. Superb.
We only stayed for one night, our room was upgraded to lake view which was incredible.
We tried the Spa and hot tub which were great and very relaxed. Service in the hotel was the best we have experienced. Dinner was the best we have ever had and breakfast was as good. Give it a go, you will not be dissapointed.
Confusing Admin - Excellent Food
The booking process was confusing and the hotel got the price incorrect to begin with.
On arrival we found we were upgraded but the reason why was never explained. There was also some confusion about the possibility of a child staying with us (which was never the case). There was also confusion about an order my son had placed for champagne on arrival and a bottle prior to eating on our second night (it was our 40th wedding anniversary). We didn't receive the bottle and at no point was my son mentioned. The manager sent flowers to our home by way of apology (which was much appreciated). The food for the evening dinner was excellent by the way - as was the upgraded accommodation - so the hotel redeemed itself for its suspect admin. I trust my son will receive a refund for his order and an apology for the poor service.
