Excellent welcome and helpful Staff.
Food and wine superb, breakfast splendid and freshly cooked to order. Although close to Virgin mainline trains, with such lovely food and accommodation, you soon become unaware of their frequency. Moreover ,even though we were in room 4 at the front of the hotel we still slept soundly.
First impressions of the Walnut Tree Inn externally are good.
Inside is decorated to a good standard albeit with no wow factor. Rooms are tidy but nothing special and there are some areas that could do with a thorough clean. The bar and restaurant area are the better parts of the hotel. The staff lack guidance and appear to consider putting the hotel guests first as an alien concept. This is based on returning from a day out on Saturday. There was live music in the bar when we returned and we stayed and had a drink before retiring. The band finished and left and at this point the staff considered it acceptable to stay up talking and drinking, this was disturbing as they were being very loud. I went at 1.00am to request they keep the noise down as we were trying to sleep. At 2.00am they were still being loud downstairs before moving outside the front of the hotel where they continued to be loud. Earlier that day the duty manager had informed us that there were ear plugs in the bathroom, which I now understand what they were for. I was also surprised that there was no mention of the train line directly opposite with trains running frequently which contributed to the noise level. The Walnut Tree has the potential to be a good hotel, unfortunately the management appear to have no control over the staff who would appear don't understand their role at the hotel. I would not stay here again nor would I recommend it as a good place to stay.
