Nowhere near good enough.
For a hotel which charges the same room rates as some of the Hilton hotels, we expected a great deal more from our stay.
The room was dingy and needed updating. The receptionist, who sat at a desk at the foot of the stairs without fail ignored guests as they came down the stairs in the morning, which was somewhat awkward apart from anything else. The food was not good, despite generous portions - even the breakfast was mixed (burnt toast, scaly tea). The 'ham and mustard sandwich' had no mustard. The restaurant also needs a good update - the water in the flower jars on the table hadn't been changed in a long time, cloudy and yellow, there were stains on the chairs and dirt on the window panes. (The restaurant was also playing Christmas music on a loop - not the end of the world, but after Twelfth Night this is a bit depressing). It's not exactly like they were rushed off their feet, these issues could easily be dealt with. There was drilling and banging before 9am - I realise it's off season and a good time to refurbish, but if you DO have guests paying to stay with you for a holiday, then maybe wait an hour. When we complained to the management as we were checking out, they apologised about the noise, but when we talked to them about the other issues, the lady we spoke to just said, 'Well, there you go.' Yes, there we do go - far away from you, White Lion, never to return. There was no option of any compensation or discount, it was not handled well. You may be well-situated on the seafront in Aldeburgh but don't get complacent. The only good thing about the White Lion was the jolly lady who worked in the restaurant and bar. She gave excellent service and was the one bright spark in an otherwise rather dingy - and expensive - stay. I don't think we would have resented all of the above quite as much if the room rates were £50 a night. But we paid £120 a night, and people staying on weekends have to pay £140 or more. It's just a blatant rip-off. It doesn't make me happy writing a review like this but it's the truth, and we weren't satisfied with the response when we tried to address these issues directly.
