No heating - needed to go to bed with clothes on!

Very disappointed by what seemed on the outside a very impressive building.

Good reception area and the front/old part of the house is very atmospheric and gives you that historical country house feel. Alas, it also has a very modern and very unimpressive back half. Room was okay, a bit dated but passable. Bathroom with cracks in the bath, unsightly mold around the tiling and a noisy extract fan was less than appealing. But, the worst part was the temperature of the room. Very cold on arrival and slow to heat up once we had turned the thermostatic radiator valves up from zero. We went down for dinner (very average) and returned about 9.30pm when the room had gotten cold again and the radiator was cold. We turned up to max but after 15 mins nothing. Went to reception (they don't answer if you try to ring) and the porter started to come to our room to check teh situation. Once we had gone thro the dividing door into the back half when the temp drops by 10 degrees he checked a couple of rads which were both off. He said that he knew what the problem was and that the timer for the heating. He confirmed he would go back and sort it out. 30 mins later and still cold we gave up (no call from phone to reception) so we went to bed with far too much of our clothes than we are used to.

We complained to the owner in the morning who confirmed that he is in the habit of setting the heating timer to go off at night. He also thought our room was warm enough - though not sure how he got to this opinion as he or the night porter had never come to check. So, I guess a room without heating is his idea of being warm enough. He said he had no other complaints but all we can say is that out room was without heating from 9.30pm onwards. Our polite request that as a gesture he knock a small amount off the £90 room bill was met with derision.

By the way the breakfast was okay - though the coffee was awful. Summary, if you want a room with heating or an owner who is sympathetic to guests issues then I would stay elsewhere.

Mansfield Castle

Friendly staff.

Communal areas a little shabby in places but room was fine. Food ok, customer service levels good. Didn't have breakfast due to early start. Car park area dark and uneven so many puddles. Other than that quite good.
