About the hotel
The Original Raj Hotel in Edinburgh is the UK's first Indian themed hotel. Opened by Lady Shakira Caine in Spring 2000, as the name suggests the hotel aims to conjure up the images of elegance and opulence of days gone by. The hotel is situated approx.
1 mile from the City Centre, on the main airport road. The Hotel does not have a private car-park but metered parking (mon-fri 0830-1730) is available in neighbouring side streets of Hotel. A selection of soft drinks is available as part of room service. This hotel appeals to guests who are looking for something genuinely different which is well located for the Centre of Edinburgh at reasonable prices. Bedrooms are en-suite, spacious, clean and modern with a traditional Indian theme. They are individually decorated in different colours to convey a warm and peaceful atmosphere to our guests. Our hotel is close to the centre of Edinburgh and perfect for families, independent and business travellers or anyone looking for a peaceful and quiet, affordable hotel. The Original Raj Hotel is owned by celebrity chef and entrepreneur Tommy Miah who also owns the well-known Raj Restaurant on The Shore in Leith, as well as The Tommy Miah's Raj Hotel in London. The hotel furnishings are of Indian hardwood, handmade in Jaipur from recycled Australian railway sleepers.
A continental breakfast will be available for the price of £8. 00 per person and has to be pre-ordered at the time of the check-in. Breakfast not included in room rate.

This only positive aspect of our stay was the attentive, helpful receptionist.
Our room on the top floor was a shock. The carpet was dirty, walls grubby and an empty miniature bottle was rolling around inside tatty bedside cupboard. The bed looked like it had been made by a child- bottom sheet didn't even cover mattress and the flat foam pillows thrown on top. Half expected to find someone in residence already hiding in bathroom. It was awful, like a poor lodging house from the 50's. Wanted to turn around immediately and leave but had arrived in early hours and nowhere to go. Couldn't sleep as a motor next door clicked on and off all night. Had read other reviews on site before booking too so obviously some rooms must be better than others in that they are cleaned before guests arrive. It was one of the worst places I have ever stayed.
