About the hotel
The Black Swan at Helmsley is a historic inn, turned boutique hotel. Its varied exterior, with its black & white timbered, Elizabethan and Georgian elements, portrays a rich history dating back to the C15th. Right in the heart of one of the North Yorks Moors' prettiest villages, the hotel is smartly appointed, blending antiques with classic contemporary design.
Originally a coaching inn, it thrived throughout the 20th century and became a well-know refuge for those escaping from everyday life. In essence, that's still what we do today. Guests come here to walk in the North York Moors National Park, enjoy Helmsley's many shops and galleries, visit great landmarks like York Minster, Castle Howard and Rievaulx Abbey, and explore Whitby and the coast. Yorkshire is renowned as being a county which produces some of the finest foods in the UK and nowhere is this recognised more than at Helmsley's Black Swan Hotel. The Gallery, the hotel's acclaimed 3 AA rosette restaurant, offers three distinct menus for dinner, all of which use ingredients sourced from within 30 miles of the hotel wherever possible and change regularly to utilise the best seasonal produce.

Excellent Staff Shame about the room.
The food and staff were excellent.
However our room was small. JUst about enough space to walk passed the end of the bed. Had to move the chair to get into the wardrobe where the Tea and Coffee facilities were stored. Bedside lighting was so bad it wasn;t possible to read in bed without removing the lamp shades. Dressing table looked as if it had lived for a few years in a school room. The mattress was old and tired and at the end of our stay I had severe back ache. Worth going just for the staff and food. Bookers should be made aware that if they wish to stay for dinner it should be booked before travelling. We were offered a 6.30 dinner for the Saturday night.
A brillant short break.
Excellent food and accommodation enhanced by efficient, knowledgable and friendly staff.
