Burton is on the river Trent, not to be confused with the much larger Burton in Staffordshire which is also on the same river. The Stather part of the village name is a corruption of staithes, which were used on a landing stage for a ferry. The ferry ceased to operate at the end of the 19th century when the bridge was opened over the river at Keadby and Gunness. The Sheff' is at the top of a hill a short walk to the river and commanding views over the Trent plain and the Isle of Axholme.
Burton is in the most attractive part of North Lincolnshire close to Normanby Hall, a large country park with many attractions including the Hall itself (Regency) a Victorian garden, farming museum, deer park, golf course and many attractive walks.
There are many other attractive walks by the River Trent and along the escarpment to the turf maze at Alkborough.
A perfect base for the many walks around the area.
