I had read reviews regarding the Woodland Spa and as a result arranged treatments for my wife and I.

We don't live local to Burnley, so we decided an overnight stay would let us make best use of a night away from the kids and have a relaxing night away. We had read that the Woodland Spa had newly re-furbished rooms, which as it turns out is the Crow Wood accommodation. We decided on Crow Wood because it was onsite, so was by far the most convenient to use the Spa and restaurant. We didn't really want to be trekking backwards and forwards between facilities and off site hotel. Breakfast was included and night rate was reasonable. The site is just off the M65 and so easy to find. On arrival the car park is big and we had no trouble parking. On first appearance the buildings are very nice, the garden areas, pathways etc are very well maintained.

You enter through the leisure club and are greeted by the staff who are very friendly, polite and welcoming. The lady that looked after us, checked us in, showed us to our room and then when we were ready showed us around the complex, so how to get to the spa, restaurant, gym, swimming pool etc. Very handy and certainly not invading.

The room we stayed in was modern and very clean. It was spacious, almost a little too big because it did look a bit sparse. Maybe it could have done with a small couch to take up some of the room. Maybe they have extra room in case an additional bed or cot is required. However it was nice to be able to walk around freely. The bathroom again was equally spacious and very clean. It was tiled throughout and the shower was excellent. If there was a downside, it was that there wasn't a bath. But you could argue that you may not need a bath if you were using the thermal pools etc. The gym again looked full of modern equipment and was clean. We didn't however use it. We ate in the restaurant in the evening (Bertrams) and the food was excellent. The quality was good and just the right portion size to leaving you feeling full but not stuffed. We had a started between 2 of us but ordered sides with the main, so you could say that we both had 2 courses. I ordered the duck which came with thick chips and creamy cabbage and bacon. Chips were good and well seasoned. I like having a load of rock salt on chips. The duck was nicely pink inside, skin was rendered ok but I would have like it a little crispier. My wife ordered the trio of lamb, which looked a picture and tasted just as good. The lamb cutlets were tender and pie had creamy potato and tasty filling. The mash and sauce we lovely too. The spa treatments were great, the facilities are all excellently maintained, everything feels clean and well run. The staff really do look after you and yes you do feel relaxed coming out. So if there was a downside of our stay I would say that the rooms are a little noisy. First of all there seemed to be a fairly loud buzzing noise which droned on until about 11-11:30 at night. Almost like an extractor fan. Giving that the rooms back onto the kitchen area of the lounge I can only assume that that was the case. Once that went off it would have been quiet, other than for upstairs, which I assume is the apartment accommodation, who had a liking to stomping around a lot. You can also hear conversations (albeit muffled through the flooring). I understand that the apartment is advertised as suitable for hen do etc. I have nothing against people wanting to treat them selves, letting their hair down, having a good time etc, but I would expect that the hotel/accommodation be able to withstand that.

Given that we booked to get away as a relaxing night and I expect that upstairs weren't even that raucous compared to what could have been, this demonstrates that the rooms are just a little too flimsy sound proofing wise. I would have expected better given the marketing. So overall, this is a great place to come and stay. The spa and restaurant are better than the accommodation. If they manage to somehow improve the noise insulation then the accommodation would be a match for the rest of the complex because the room is clean, modern and spacious.
