About the hotel
Keeper's Cottage is a 250 year old gamekeepers cottage, once part of the Brougham Hall estate. We are surrounded by open fields and trees with distant views of the Lake District hills on one side, and the Penine hills on the other. Ideally situated on a quiet country lane, we are only two miles from the market town of Penrith and the M6 motorway, one mile from the nearest pub which serves very good food and is a pleasant walk away, and five miles from Ullswater.
Enjoy breakfast in our large sunny conservatory surrounded by period furniture and interesting antiques. Less than a mile away is historic Brougham Castle, an English Hertage site on the banks of the River Eamont which is well worth a visit. World famous Wetheriggs Pottery is close by also, where you can "throw your own pot!" We are situated at the end of one of the most scenic and spectacular routes in England, recently voted one of the top five in the world. If you want to explore our beautiful country lanes and cycle paths we have bikes available for you to hire. From junction 40 take the road A6 South, then at next roundabout take the 4th exit, follow the sign to Shap, then carry on past the beehive pub on left, go on up the hill, we are 2nd left, then 2nd cottage on the left

Whilst the cottage is a little awkward to find, it is lovely.
Close to the M6 so handy after a day's travelling and in a country lane surrounded by fields and an excellent pub (The Beehive) down the road - pet friendly with excellent staff and food. We stayed two nights and had a beautiful room with views overlooking the countryside. Pat and her husband made us feel very welcome in their home and we had excellent breakfasts in their lovely conservatory. We would definitely go again.
Pretty cottage and garden
The owners made us very welcome to their lovely home, which is really lovely with loads of antiques and special touches.
The conservatory where breakfast is served is enormous and full of interesting objects. The room was very comfortable and the breakfast was very tasty - great Cumberland sausages. We'd certainly stay here again.
