About the hotel

Our building dates from 1860, when built amongst the last of the New Town. We are Grade 2 Listed , which means sadly we cannot install a lift. Our founder was Eliza, who had spent her youth in Service, from Large Estates to Hotels to private residences.

She had vision, and was ahead of her time, when she converted our buildings from National Coal Board Offices to an eclectic hotel with en suite facilities ; one of the first to do so in Edinburgh. She wanted the hotel to remain as true as possible to its heritage, and as you look around, you will see a sympathetic conversion of an 1860 New Town Town House. Also it means, no two rooms are the same! It is a philopshy we like to continue in her memory, and we are in the process of some changes, which we hope you will like!

We arrived 1 hour after the earliest check in time and our room was not ready.

We were then informed that the house keeper had gone home for the evening and the young man behind the bar was alone. He set off to get our room ready and was a way for a while. Other guest that were already checked in were by this time looking for him to retrieve there room keys. He returned 45 minutes later and told where the room was. The following morning at checkout we were informed the card machine was not working . I had the cash on me so paid. I asked for a receipt and after a bit of running back and forward he gave me a receipt. He also refunded me the £5 difference between what he had charged me and what was on the receipt .
