About the hotel

Our building dates from 1860, when built amongst the last of the New Town. We are Grade 2 Listed , which means sadly we cannot install a lift and there's a LOT of stairs, great if you are into exercise, but not so great if you aren't able bodied. Our founder was Eliza, who had spent her youth in Service, from Large Estates to Hotels to private residences.

She had vision, and was ahead of her time, when she converted our buildings from National Coal Board Offices in 1962, to an eclectic hotel with en suite facilities, TVs etc ; one of the first to do so in Edinburgh. Eliza had seen that the Ritz in London was founded by Cesar Ritz, who liked her had worked his way up , and with her sense of humour, she couldn't resist calling her hotel The Ritz! She wanted the hotel to remain as true as possible to its heritage, and as you look around, you will see a sympathetic conversion of an 1860 New Town Town House. Also it means, no two rooms are the same! And we have original cornices! It is a philopshy we like to continue in her memory, and we are in the process of some changes, which will take time, but we wish to remain true to her memory and keep it original & quirky!

Very friendly staff, clean room

Very Nice and cheap hôtel in the heart of Edinburgh.

The staff has been extremely friendly and helpful. The fourniture in the room was à little bit outdated, but overall very clean.

Would stay again there.

Great as a base

Staff were excellent.

We stayed in room 5 which was a big room which was great. Plenty of storage space and electrical sockets and mirrors (3 women getting ready). Towels and bedding were clean however the rest of the room was a little tired. Had to really bang wardrobe doors to close them, dust on the spindles of the chair, one of the curtains had come away from some of the hooks, however as the windows were so big it wouldn't be an easy job to put them back. Net curtains were very old and dirty looking and window did not open. Nice size bath and plenty of hot water. No hand soap, only conditioner and body lotion, however we had a decent size hand towel and bath towel each which do not always get in 4* hotels. Hotel is in a good location - 10 minute walk and in Prince's Street, also a nice quite location. Would definitely consider staying again if in area.
