About the hotel

The pet friendly Hope and Anchor is reputed to be one of the oldest buildings in the popular seaside village of Alnmouth. It has been an Inn for as long as people can remember, and its walls will no doubt carry secrets and stories, which only they can tell. The beautiful region of Northumberland has lots to offer, from long stretches of deserted sandy beaches to a plethora of historic castles and sites.

All of our accommodation is ideally suited as a base to explore the many sights & sounds of the region. We have storage for bikes as we are on part of the Coast & Castle route. Today, after a long period of refurbishment, John and Barbara Davison can offer you a comfortable base from which you can enjoy the delights of the heritage coastline, golf courses, cycle ways, walks and wide sandy beaches. There are 2 large family rooms, 4 double rooms, 1 twin room and 1 single room, all with en-suite showers and WCs. You can relax in our cosy and well stocked bar, and re-fuel your energy levels in our informal restaurant. We have recently won an award for our food as we use only the finest local organic ingrediants and everything is homemade (including the chips). We offer a childrens menu where everything is fresh and homemade. We have a selection of real ales from around the region. Dogs are more than welcome to come and stay with us at no extra charge. They are also allowed one part of our restaurant. We can also provide ample room and catering for that special occassion, be it a wedding reception, birthday party or meeting. There is no car park so it is on-street parking which unfortunately is out of our control.

Disappointed in Alnmouth

The Hope and Anchor occupies a great position on the Main Street of a picturesque coastal town.

The dining area is both spacious and inviting, it leads into an adjoining Italian restaurant as well. Our room had clearly been recently renovated and still smelled new. Unfortunately the evidence of builders still on site in what is holiday season seemed rather a poor decision by the owner. Closer scrutiny showed the renovations to have been made without a great deal of thought ; the shower door allowed water to flood the bathroom, the hand sink was so small to make face washing impossible and the wardrobe was so big that navigating around the tiny room was somewhat challenging.

The disappointment for us came when we entered the dining room to order an evening meal to be told it was fully booked, this was not even mentioned on our arrival and it left us having to wander around Alnmouth trying to find somewhere to eat after a hard days travelling.

That being said, Sunday's breakfast was very good ( just don't order the scrambled eggs). Overall, what could have been a fabulous stay over in a charming place just left us with a bad taste in the mouth.

hope and anchor a northumberland experience.

A very nice break at a lovely hotel, the village/town was very friendly lots of places to eat and drink.

The beaches were fantastic, rugged, sand dunes and empty, a very dog friendly place most places accepted dogs. The staff at the Hope and Anchor were very good and talkativeand, they were very helpful. However the one downfall was the Breakfast times-8.15 -9.15 for a cooked breakfast, some of the ladies were in a big northern golf competition at Foxton Hall Golf Club a mile away and it meant they could not have a cooked breakfast, when we asked the staff he helped all he could and left some serial and fruit out for them and milk in the fridge, but no coffee or tea.The other girls that teed of later ate a great full english that was very nice indeed. Maybe the hotel could be flexible on the times. All in all a great place and we will be going back later on.
