Montcalm London City Suites: Beautiful Hotel, Bad Night Sleep
I stayed at Montcalm for one night whilst I had work in London.
The hotel itself is beautiful with period features from it's old days of being a brewery. However for the price I was paying I felt it was far too much and have to be honest and say I've had better hotel experiences in budget hotels. Firstly I had to be up for my work at 5am so I wanted to get a good night sleep but found it very difficult to sleep since it seems the restaurant attached to the hotel backs onto it's courtyard, the room had it's original Victorian sash windows, which look beautiful however aren't practical in this case since I could hear people in the courtyard laughing, yelling, chatting until 2am. A problem I have with most hotels I stay in is that there's never enough of those mini milk cartons they put in the rooms, usually however this isn't a problem in most hotels I've stayed in, I go to the front desk and ask for some extras and they helpfully give me some. At Montcalm, I was charged for someone to bring me a jug of milk, all I wanted was a couple more mini milks so I could have a cup of tea when I woke up.
I feel for the price I was already paying for ONE NIGHT, this was ridiculous to be charged for, all other hotels I have stayed in have never charged for extra milk and it would've been cheaper for me to go and buy my own milk from Tesco down the road, which in hindsight I wish I had done. So despite the (what I feel was) overcharging for milk and the noisy-until-2am courtyard outside my window....the staff were friendly the building was beautiful and the interior design was fabulous, but I will not be staying here again. This may be better suited for people who aren't needing to be up early for a job or work, but would be perfect if you're planning for a night out.
Beautiful and comfortable room
Stunning reception area.
The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was chic and modern and we had all the facilities we needed. Lovely design. The service was great. We were upgraded when we arrived and the staff were polite and professional. We ordered room service but unfortunately there was a problem in the kitchen that night. The staff were very apologetic and offered us free snacks and drinks, which was a nice touch. A good stay. Just around the corner is the Barbican and some nice restaurants, so the location was convenient. I will keep it in mind for future trips.
