About the hotel
Just a few miles from Exeter, this unique 19th century lodge offers characterful yet convenient budget accommodation in the heart of Devon. Originally a brewhouse, skittle alley and stables, The St George and Dragon now provides a handy base for exploring Dartmoor National Park or the unspoilt beaches of two coastlines. As well as 21 relaxing rooms, it’s home to a cosy, traditional pub – so if you love the food, drink and atmosphere of a classic country inn, you’re in exactly the right place.
Nestled in the pretty village of Clyst St George near Topsham, the lodge is surrounded by farms and historic buildings, including medieval Powderham Castle. Nature fans will love the acres of ancient moorland and the National’s Trust’s huge Killerton House Estate, which are both just a short distance away. Exeter itself is also well worth a visit, with its magnificent Gothic Cathedral, mysterious medieval underground passages and bustling quayside area full of shops and bars.

Innkeeper's Lodge Exeter, Clyst St George
Very satisfied with hotel accommodation, food and staff.
We just stayed for one night as had something to go to locally.
Upon arrival we waited for ages for a member of staff and in the end my wife wandered round the pub to find one. The girl was very friendly and helpful which made up for the wait. We went to our room but straight away there was an awful damp smell and the bathroom had a wet room style shower like you get in hospital and it was filthy. My wife went and asked to change rooms which they kindly obliged and apologised. We went to our new room. Luckily there was no damp smell but the bathroom was just as disgusting. We actually took pictures. The showerhead and tiles haven't been cleaned in a long time. The dust and dirt around the room was not great either. The bed side lamp hadn't seen a duster in a while. As we were in a hurry and had a taxi booked in less than an hour to go out we just had to put up with it and reasoned all the rooms were probably like this. Luckily it was just a bed for the night as were out but thats not the point and at £76 for the night I would expect a much higher standard of cleanliness. We weren't able to tell anyone upon check out either as again nobody around but just a box on the counter to put your room key in on the way out. I must admit I thought it was oddthey made me pay for the room upon arrival rather than checkout. That way you've paid before you've seen the room!!!
