About the hotel
Welcome to The Great House Hotel, a grade II listed building, believed to have been a gift from Queen Elizabeth 1 to the Earl of Leicester for use as a hunting lodge. More modern day Royal connections are via His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales who has visited when travelling throughout Wales. Conveniently situated just 5 minutes from M4 junctions 35 and 37, the hotel is located in the heart of the Conservation village of Laleston and overlooks the ancient village church.
Some of the places of interest close by include the old thatched village of Merthyr Mawr and Candleston Dunes. We are also well placed for a range of walks and 10 golf courses including the championship courses at The Royal Porthcawl and Pyle and Kenfig. Margam Abbey and Country Park are also just 5 minutes away. Leicester's Restaurant at The Great House has twice been awarded Country Restaurant of the Year . A variety of dishes are served to 2 AA rosette standard, and food is made from high-quality local ingredients. Please note that the restaurant does not open for dinner on Sunday evenings. There is also a small health suite with a sauna and Jacuzzi. Free wireless broadband access.

Not the best for the money. Noisy, cobwebs and musty smelling room
We stayed in the outside annexe room "lleft" the room was very dissapointing.
Cobwebs, musty smell and the bathroom was very poor condition. The room had dated decor and the noise from other rooms using taps etc was very loud. We booked this hotel on the basis it had a sauna and jacuzzi in the spa. We asked if there treatments available when calling but they were fully booked but we're told we could use the spa facilities. On arriving when we asked where the spa was we were told we couldn't use the sauna/jacuzzi as there were treatments booked but they would set it up for us at around 6pm. We had already arranged our meal for 7pm so this was no good. The evening meal was very good also the breakfast did not disappoint. There is nothing stating on the website that the spa facilities cannot be used if not having treatments.
We booked this hotel because it had a spa and although the treatments were fully booked we just wanted to have a relaxing day in the sauna/jacuzzi. We had narrowed the hotels down to two hotels and chose the wrong one. The staff did mention that there are refurbishments taking place to update the hotel so the rooms may improve but I can't see the noise from adjoining rooms changing as it is from the water pipes. Be warned that the noise is very loud as if they are in the same room!
Fab little hotel, great restaurant
Hetel staff couldn't do enough for us, inclding keeping the restaurant open to accommodate our very late arrival.
Food was fantastic, as you'd expect from a restaurant that appears in the michelin guide. Rooms were clean and very inkeeping with the style of the building. This is not an uber modern hotel so if that's what you're after it's not for you, but it is full of charm & character & the staff & food are both wonderful. Couldn;t fault it, would go again.
