Perfectly adequate for a business trip, perhaps wouldn't be my choice for a family holiday

I stayed here because I had a conference at the University of Reading.

It was very close to the Earley Gate for the university, easily walkable, and relatively cheap for B&Bs in the area. The bed was very comfy and the bedsheets very clean. The room itself was rather worn but clean so it was very good for my purposes. The toilet was outside the room, which I was aware of before I arrived, so that was fine. However, I did have to go down a rather steep staircase to get to the toilet, which was a little hazardous in the middle of the night, and the carpets in the communual hallways not that clean (not so nice when you are barefoot on your way to the toilet!). There was no wi-fi when I stayed, but I was told that it would be back soon.

I would probably stay here again for business purposes, and it's a good budget choice for groups of students who are visiting Reading together, but it's decidedly unromantic. If you are going with an elderly person or a young child, perhaps bear in mind that access to many of the rooms appeared to involve going up some steep-ish stairs.

Budget accommodation conveniently locate

As a single traveller visiting to undertake research in the University of Reading archives (Museum of Rural Life), I found this hotel conveniently located, 35 minute walk from main train station (although there were buses too) and easy to find as on main road, twenty five minute walk to MERL/London Road campus.

Hotel was very near to two big parks, so think it would be a nice location to say in summer. The owner was friendly - addressed all guests by first name. Accommodating of breakfast requests (just had beans and toast as vegan, but asked for extra toast and was happy to oblige). Juice in the morning was a plus. Surprised on arrival to find my room had two beds (single and double) as only paid for standard single. Room was big and clean clean, shower in room and room and shower were both warm. Bad points: next to a busy road, and door rattled when cars went past. Room also appeared to be next to family living room (could hear TV). Room also close to breakfast room, and fellow guests were noisy in morning. Also, payment for room appeared to have been taken when I arrived from my debit card, without my knowledge (would have preferred to have paid cash/asked how I would have liked to have paid).
