About the hotel

Discover Eskdale and the Western Lakes by staying at Stanley House, where we offer B&B but better. We offer a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere and a B&B experience with a bit more freedom. Our 12 en-suite rooms are all spacious and furnished to a high standard, with lovely views of our private gardens or the gentle steam trains of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

All our rooms have flat screen TVs and DVD players and there is free wifi throughout the house. We have family suites available and dogs are welcome in half our rooms. And you’re not confined to your room at Stanley House as we have two comfortable and cosy sitting rooms and beautiful gardens for guests to enjoy. We’ll look after breakfast for you, but you are then welcome to make your own snacks and meals throughout the day with full access to our open plan kitchen and dining room. Our well-stocked Open Larder has all the ‘basic essentials’ you’ll need! If you’d prefer to avoid any cooking, Stanley House is within walking distance of some fine Inns in Boot or Eskdale Green. Our own sister property, The Woolpack, is nearby at the foot of Hardknott Pass and serves food all day. The beautiful valley of Eskdale is in the heart of the Lake District National Park, and at Stanley House the fells really are on our doorstep. On offer is a choice of walks from gentle lowland paths along the River Esk, to the more strenuous heights of Scafell Pike. There’s a wayside halt right outside our door where you can catch the famous Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway or La’al Ratty as it’s known locally. Nearby, you’ll find Wastwater in Wasdale - voted Best View in Britain, and other great local attractions such as Muncaster Castle and the Owl Trust, the coastal village of Ravenglass or the Maritime Festival town of Whitehaven - an ancient smugglers haven. Stanley House is also available for sole private use so you can enjoy your own house party for family celebrations and group activities.

Idyllic Base Camp!

I stayed at Stanley House for the first time in late June.

I needed somewhere comfortable, quiet and central to the area I love to explore - Eskdale. It was an ideal location to start walks in the surrounding valleys and fells. Many trails lead off from nearby Boot, which also has a payphone and the Brook House Inn has fantastic local ales and great food, a walkers and campers paradise.

Stanley House boasts an open kitchen for guests to use throughout the day. While I didn't make use of this during my stay, it would be ideal for guests who are staying around the hotel during the day, providing a handy place to put up some sandwiches for a day out, or simply have an afternoon coffee or bottle of wine. The cooked breakfasts and wide range of cereals available are plenty ample to set up a walker, hiker, fisherman or family for a long day in the local area, with friendly and attentive staff to look after your needs. The rooms are very attractively decorated, in keeping with the style of the building and the area, the bathrooom facilities are perfect to recover from a long day out, large, deep baths are a must. The hotel, while full of guests, remained quiet and sleep was easy to come by in the spacious, fresh feeling beds.

I could not have asked for a better setting for my summer break, I cannot wait to stay there again.
