About the hotel

Dating from around 1659, this traditional coaching inn is set in a quiet country village only 10 minutes from Carlisle and junction 43 of the M6 motorway. String of Horses lies in the middle of one of the most beautiful and historic areas of Britain: near Hadrian's Wall, the Lake District and the Scottish borders. With its oak beams and panelling, open fires and gleaming brassware, the String of Horses has welcomed visitors from all over the world for more than 350 years.

Though acclaimed for its ‘yesteryear’ ambience, the inn looks after you in 21st-century style, with great food and, in every room, free Wi-Fi access, TV and en suite bathrooms.

stopover

We stopped here for one night after a trip to Scotland.

Room clean and comfy for four of us, ate in the bar - enormous portions of really well cooked fish and chips - perfect. Lovely friendly staff and a good beer selection, too, apparently.

Breakfast was the high spot though, really the nicest sausages and bacon in ages which set us up for a good day exploring Lanercost Priory and Hadrians Wall.

All in all a great find. Thank you to all.

Friendly staff - great food

I got a warm greeting and enjoyed the traditional pub feel with real ales and a lovely evening meal next to the log fire.

The staff were attentive and friendly and the room clean. Breakfast was really good too!
