About the hotel
Holnicote House lies at the heart of a 12,500 acre estate in the Exmoor National Park. Owned by the National Trust, this historic country house is set amidst peaceful gardens with an outdoor heated pool (open in the summer). There are 34 bedrooms in the main building and in cottages in the grounds.
Facilities include two lounges, a dining room, bar and ballroom. The Exmoor National Park offers many excellent walking and cycling routes, many from the door of Holnicote House, with the opportunity to spot red deer and Exmoor ponies. Close by are the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth, connected by their Victorian cliff railway, and just a short walk from the fascinating Valley of Rocks. The beach at Minehead is popular with families, as is the West Somerset steam railway. Also nearby are several historic National Trust properties, including Dunster Castle. Communal dining at fixed dinner times.

HF staff are usually relaxed and engaging .. Not so at Selworthy
Meal was not up to usual HF standard.
Duck was overcooked and fruit salad dessert was just pear and apple with orange juice. I trust this was not typical so would stay here again as HF are more than just a bed and food.
Lovely setting, but we had not realized that it was HF who rented out rooms on a B and basis if their groups were not full.
There was therefore no one on reception and when we inadvertently left our key in the room, we were told by one of the group leaders that we would have to wait an hour until the manager arrived. When she did arrive - 2 hours later- she told us that the staff were on site and we only had to call and she would have come straight over. It would have been useful to have known. We also had to make enquiries about breakfast time. We were unable to use the shower as the door was broken and to do so would have flooded the bathroom. We reported this but nothing was done and the attitude of Val, (assistant manager?) was very "couldn't care less" so we had 2 days of a walking holiday without a proper shower. Breakfast was plentiful, but all pre-prepared except the eggs.
