The hotel is only a ten minute drive from the M4 Motorway and is a great stop over point for Guests travelling long distant, we are also very close to some beautiful historic towns, With Lacock Abby only five minutes away, which has been filmed for some tv dramas and films, Stone Henge is around forty five minutes from the hotel which is a must see for people visiting, Other places to Visit are Avebury stones and also a ten minute train journey to bath city center. Calne has had some famous people born and raised in or close to the town, Dr Joseph Priestley isolated oxygen and discovered its properties in 1774; there is a plaque in the town center commemorating this. He ended his days in America. Dr Ingen-Housz: a Dutchman, who had previously worked in Vienna on an antidote to small-pox, discovered photosynthesis. He died in Calne. His is buried in the crypt at St Mary`s church across the road from us. During the two World Wars there were vast RAF hutted camps at Yatesbury and Compton Bassett. Here pilots and Observers were trained in World War1 and Radio and the new ‘hush-hush’ Radar operators were trained in World War2. Sir Arthur C. Clarke, of space exploration fame, was a radar instructor and the radical Canon John Collins was chaplain. Many well-known people did their National Service there. Between 1938 and 1965, when Yatesbury closed, 150,958 RAF personnel passed through its gates. Now it is as if it had never been. All that remain are green fields; a memorial; 2 listed WW1 hangars and the Officers’ Mess

Tired

This hotel is in a very poor run down state, needs a lot of work doing to it to bring it up to at least an acceptable state.

It's a bit off when as a family we had 5 booked rooms and the comments where it's a in a sorry state. One even passed comment of - it's a bit off when you have to wipe your feet leaving the hotel. Access to outside rooms not suitable for cases parking area needs to be organised is just a shambles with people getting blocked in. Took for ever to get shower at a decent temperature.

Weekend break

Pleasant, helpful staff and a convenient location right in the centre of Calne.

The double glazing was quite effective in dealing with traffic going past on the A4 and the bedroom itself was fine. Aspects of the hotel such as the creaking floors of the corridors are "tired" and could do with some renovation though.
