Being a frequent visitor to Dorset I had often seen this hotel and it grand Art Deco design so decided to book a night there.
As the title suggests it didn't live up to expectations. Having read the website claiming a 4 million pound refurbishment I thought it would be nice to stay there and see it for myself. The rooms weren't as great as I'd imagined. I had booked a standard room, no sea view, no problem but I hadn't realised that the standard rooms were not actually adjoined to the main building. Instead I was directed to the "chalet" style building around the back of the hotel that looked very dated and very old (the 80's sitcom hi de hi came to mind). The outside of the building and staircase were actually being painted the day I arrived which in my mind should've probably been done first as first impressions really do count. Arriving at my room the door lock took a bit of a wiggle to get the key in but eventually opened. Initially the room didn't look to bad, white sheets, white furniture (possibly from IKEA) and a nice bright led lamp. Soon enough I had realised all wasn't as it seemed. The bedside shelve unit wasn't actually level nor was it very well attached to the wall, it was also slightly sticky. Although the room looked like it had been done well it could've been arranged better. The fridge was in a non ventilated cupboard so didn't actually get very cold but the cupboard did get warm. The bathroom had been done nicely but could've done with more places to hang towels, swimwear etc to dry off. I then decided to visit the on site leisure centre to go for a swim. The swimming pool was very nice, good size and it seemed well maintained. The changing rooms on the other hand must've been still due for refurb as they looked like they had seen better days. Painted in various colours, red, green and purple with only a communal changing area and no seperate cubicles or lockers. They were also a short distance from the pool which at the time was a very cold walk from the pool to the changing area. Maybe I had ideas of grandure and higher expectations but overall I was disappointed with the way it is advertised to how it actually was. Hopefully they will spend a little more on improvements and bring it back to how it should be and then it could possibly be one of the best hotels in the area.
Really good experience.
