About the hotel
The Firs Hotel is a family managed hotel perfect for both business and leisure visits, centrally located in the popular Hitchin market town in Hertfordshire. The 27 ensuite bedrooms have flat screen televisions, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryers and free wifi throughout the hotel. The hotel has some ground floor bedrooms and one room has disabled facilities.
The spacious licensed bar is a particular feature of the hotel. The hotel has a large free car park. Any booking made by the same person for more than six rooms on the same day, is required to pay for all the rooms on booking. No refund is given in the event of cancellation.

Unhappy with room and treatment re complaint
I only stayed in the room for about 10 minutes.
I asked for a secure room in my Laterooms specification. It was on the ground floor which wasn't best. The room was airless but the only window which could open and still be safe was a skylight which needed a pole to be used to manipulate the catch. I was given the instruction not to open it wider than an inch at night or if it rained. I was not happy with that but I was tired so decided to live with it. Then I noticed a sizable hole in the wall with a loose metal flap over it - not sure what that was - certainly it was very odd but I let it go. But then, when I went into the bathroom to wash I noticed hairs on the toilet seat lid and streaks on the seat as if it had been given a quick and not at all clean wipe. I felt sick about staying now so went back to reception, told them the problem and said I wished to leave,explaining about the loo in particular. (I waited until two customers booking in had completed, not wishing to be vindictive or embarrass the hotel). The receptionist expresses surprise at the toilet issue and did offer me another more secure and hopefully cleaner room but I said that I felt unwell at what I had seen and had lost confidence in the hotel's cleanliness. I did say that I thought a refund would be fair under the circumstances as I had shown up and met my end of the arrangement, turning up on time and ready to be a guest who now felt forced to leave without having the accommodation I paid for. She doubted that I would get one. I gave her my email address and asked her to get the manager to contact me re this, and at the very least refund the cost of a breakfast I would not be eating. I have not heard anything. I am not unreasonable and use hotels regularly and have never felt that I needed to leave like this. I paid £58 for nothing, plus petrol and time and it is not good enough. However priced,no room should leave someone feeling sick and forced to look elsewhere despite being exhausted. I would expect good customer service from such a longstanding and seasoned local establishment like the Firs Hotel. I did not get it.
I am sorry the hotel did not meet your expectations. We checked the room
and could not find any hairs or smears on the toilet seat. The bedroom has
a dorma window with a note asking guests to leave the window open only an
inch if they are in NOT in the room in case it rains. I regret that you
decided not to accept our offer of a staying in another room. I was advised
you only wanted to be contacted by e-mail and not by phone. I have replied
to your comments.
