distance footpaths pass through Middleton-in-Teesdale: the famous Pennine Way and the Teesdale Way. The northwards stretch of both is a beautiful walk along the River Tees taking in Low Force and High Force waterfalls and then
on to Cauldron Snout; England's largest cascade. Further on the same path High Cup Nick is an inspirational must-see, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of North East England. The area is also home to some fantastic sites of historic interest including the lofty Bernard's Castle and the 12th century ruins of Bowes Castle and Brough Castle. There is also the medieval beauty of Raby Castle, offering intimidating fortifications, an
extraordinary art collection and vast acres of parkland home to ornamental lakes and herds of deer. Just a short drive from the Hotel, in the historic town of Barnard Castle, is the world-famous Bowes Museum. The Hotel is located right in the centre of the country village of Middleton-in-Teesdale in the North Pennines. Just over a 20 minute drive from Barnard Castle and the A66, or 53 minutes from Darlington. Darlington Rail Station offers excellent transport links to the rest of the UK or there is a closer station at Bishop Auckland a 45 minute drive from the hotel. Visitors can catch a scheduled bus service from Darlington to Barnard Castle and then another to Middleton-in-Teesdale. For those flying in, Newcastle Airport is a 1 hour and 22 minute drive away.
